Free Guy Movie is the tale of Guy becoming self-aware, realizing that he can, and should, make choices in life. That’s partly thanks to some artificial intelligence code buried in his virtual DNA by Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery), and partly thanks to the existentialist philosophy of the movie he’s in. Let’s put it this way: Guy is not the only character in the film who needs to learn to take responsibility for his life and his choices.
“Free Guy Movie” is like a hyperactive puppy. It really wants to be your friend. It’s easy to like and fun to hang out with. It also has a habit of running around in circles, losing its focus, and shitting on the floor. A family action movie that targets the Fortnite Generation, “Free Guy” also preaches the importance of individuality while not only feeling like a dozen other movies but literally incorporating some of their imagery. An enjoyable cast, including movie-stealing work from Jodie Comer, holds it all together, but one can still see just enough glitches in this matrix to wish it was better.

Our writer added in our Free Guy review: “At the end of the day Free Guy succeeds both as a film and as the kind of escapism the world needs right now.” Free Guy, though, is a highly entertaining movie with quite a few cameos. One of the cameos, in particular, had me clapping. And the soundtrack is amazing. I can’t think of another actor other than Ryan Reynolds who could have played Guy to such perfection.
One glance at FREE GUY, the newest big budget offering from Hollywood’s favorite action-star/comedy master Ryan Reynolds, will cause most to approach with valid skepticism. The plot seems like a cheap knockoff of films like Ready Player One or even The Matrix, but made in a crude fashion to make more money at the box office. The actual movie, however, could not be further from the worst estimates. Not only is FREE GUY Movie constantly hilarious due to Reynolds and an inventive screenplay, and not only is this possibly the feel-good event of the summer, but it also has a considerable amount of thought put into the meaning of its premise and places a mirror in front of modern-day video game culture.

The success of Free Guy Movie has lasted longer than many would have predicted, with the movie’s release on home media accruing as much hype as when the movie was released. Now that Free Guy is available to watch at home, some fans might want to watch some other movies that follow a similar concept or formula.
Free Guy isn’t exactly a movie that stands still and lets things happen around it. Dynamic camera work and an insane oner are present to open the movie, with 3D thrills already presenting themselves as Free City makes itself known to the audience. With that sort of frantic movement, audience health can be a bit of an issue, as if the movements are too fast, the 3D effect gets a bit wonky. There’s only a little bit of this sort of wonk with Free Guy’s fast moving world, and most of it is in that hyperkinetic opening. It doesn’t last for long, and it won’t make you sick, but your eyes may get a bit confused for small stretches as a result.
Free Guy is literally a movie about how “magic glasses” change the life of an NPC in a playfully violent video game. If that’s not a 3D fit, it’s time for me to get out of this gig. Free City’s open world allows for a lot of wonderful possibilities when it comes to using the 3D format, especially when Guy slips on the glasses himself and sees that intricate heads up display. But even in the “real world,” Free Guy manages to make things pop, thanks to interesting transitions and the ability to frame conversations as more than just a series of cuts back and forth.
While familiar in its premise and the latest movie to capitalize on a studio’s willingness to mash up famous pop culture IP, Free Guy is said to be a lot of fun, with tons of action, laughs, and heart, plus a bunch of surprises that critics aren’t divulging. The only place where reviews really disagree, though, is in where they land on Taika Waititi’s scene-chewing villainous role.
On several occasions, Ryan Reynolds has reiterated how Free Guy isn’t necessarily just a video game movie. After watching Free Guy, I concur! In what is possibly the best video game-genre’d “original” film in recent times, the Shawn Levy directorial is as gamer-friendly as it will be for non-gamers, like this reviewer. And with the classic Ryan Reynolds humour infused, you’re promised a summer blockbuster of epic proportions.

Five minutes after finishing Free Guy, however, I found myself looking up showtimes to re-watch one of the best films of the summer. The good news is Free Guy is available at home now, available to rent or buy from Sept. 28, and coming to 4K and Blu-ray disc on Oct. 12. These sorts of shoddy narrative choices effect Free Guy the same way shabby mechanics impact real video games: They make getting into the flow of this world and investing in its story far more difficult, and considerably less enjoyable. As a result, Free Guy’s other flaws — Lil Rel Howery is wasted on an underdeveloped part; the PG-13 rating keeps the comedy from an edge it needs; the runtime is too long — stick out a little extra.
More than anything else, Free Guy is just plain fun. I loved the nonstop references to fellow Disney properties and the video game worlds colliding in this one space. And frankly, every single actor is an absolute delight. The movie will mean a bit more to someone who gets the references or is even vaguely aware of names like Ninja or Pokimane, but otherwise it’s a movie everyone can enjoy. Free Guy is in theaters now, available on Digital and out on Blu-ray and DVD starting Oct. 12.
Free Guy is a great video game movie — if you know nothing about video games. From indie devs getting bought up and silenced by larger companies to the decisions about whether you should make something good or something mindless to the jabs at toxic men with opinions, Free Guy gets it and does not shy away from any of it. Plenty of serious documentaries and explainers dive into these topics in greater detail, but it’s refreshing that Free Guy casually includes so many of them — and gets them right.
